Neurodiversity (Nd) policy
nooh Studio Ltd, “nooh”, document updated 04.07.2023
At nooh, we believe in celebrating and embracing the unique ways in which people's brains work. This policy aims to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone, acknowledging the diverse needs and strengths of neurodivergent individuals.
Understanding Neurodiversity
Neurodiversity describes the differences in the way people’s brains work. Some of the most well-known types of neurodiversity include autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. To put it simply, neurodiversity refers to the natural variations in how people's brains function. While everyone's brain develops similarly, each one operates in its own unique way.
Being neurodivergent means having a brain that processes information differently from what is considered typical. This can include differences in social skills but also often comes with exceptional abilities in areas like analysis, information processing, and pattern recognition.
Why We Embrace Neurodiversity
Openly discussing neurodiversity helps spread awareness and fosters a culture of acceptance. At nooh, we value and celebrate these differences, understanding that they enhance our team's creativity, agility, and innovation.
We believe that our working environment and designing for neurodiversity is successful because we understand neurodiversity from the inside out. Not only is our founder neurodivergent, but so are 75% of our team. This unique insight allows us to create designs for neurodivergent people, by neurodivergent people. As Sara-Louise Ackrill, therapist, founder of Wired Differently, and a neurodivergent person herself said, “nooh’s understanding of and empathy for neurodiversity stood out from other designers.”
We are committed to creating a safe and open environment where everyone feels comfortable discussing their needs. Your conversations about accommodations will always remain confidential, and there will never be any negative consequences for seeking support.
Working with a Neurodivergent Team
Creating an inclusive workplace means supporting neurodivergent conditions. We believe that diversity empowers both employees and employers, leading to a more dynamic and innovative team.
Since everyone is unique, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to working with a neurodivergent boss or colleague. Our founder and CEO, Helena, is neurodivergent, and through our shared experiences, we've identified some practices that work well:
Clear Communication: Be direct and clear in your communication.
Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure about something.
Pace Your Questions: Avoid asking too many questions at once.
Solutions-Oriented: Come with a solution or idea when possible.
Use Visuals: Visual aids are appreciated for clarity.
Plan Ahead: Plan your communication and avoid impromptu questions.
Quiet Spaces: Avoid sensory overload by ensuring you're in a quiet space.
Humour: Humour is always welcome.
Kindness and Inclusion: Be kind and inclusive of others.
GIFs: We love GIFs!
Collaboration and Openness
Most importantly, at nooh, we believe in the power of collaboration. Be open to asking questions, helping each other, and working together. By fostering an environment where everyone feels comfortable seeking and offering support, we can harness the full potential of our diverse team. Remember, every question is an opportunity to learn, and every collaboration makes us stronger. By working together, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
