Five voices on creative storytelling

What are the tools and techniques needed to communicate your vision effectively? This month we hear from five creatives on their approach to storytelling.

I’m a graphic communicator, using my medium to translate ideas into visuals. Design is often a case of storytelling, of taking a unique message from each brand and developing it into something anyone can understand.

nooh is a collaborative space with work spanning different industries, which has led me to meet people from all areas. This month I’ve spoken to five creatives to hear how they use their expertise to communicate their story.

Henrio

I’m a musician, so my creative medium tends to be a guitar and a notebook. I have different ways and methods of telling my story. Each song requires a different process - it’s often a case of being open and flexible to different endings. There are many ways of engaging your audience, but I think the best way is to start off by mastering your craft. Having the tools to find the strongest connection between your creations and yourself as a human being allows for the audience to engage with the most honest version of yourself. It sounds easier than it is...!

My creative medium tends to change a little from time to time but at the moment it's mostly my iPad and Apple pencil. I began by sharing my progress on Instagram - building a profile has helped me to develop my own brand and story behind my business. I am definitely a visual storyteller so I enjoy how illustration can communicate a lot of things through just one image. My top tip is to be yourself and let that shine through your work. People enjoy seeing the personality behind your work and interacting with the maker.

Photography and videography are bigger than just an image or video, it’s a process of discovering your creativity, showing people how you see the world, and communicating that narrative to your audience. I use these mediums to express my creativity, build trust and relatability. Create the value you want to see and put your audience at the centre of your content creation process while being your best creative self. In short, C.E.E your audience: captivate, engage and encourage.

As a writer, I take someone else’s language of experience and translate it into something that can be universally understood. It’s a process rooted in creativity and collaboration, beginning with a dialogue and ending with an authentic narrative that connects with its readership both professionally and personally. I’m a communicator by trade - welcoming my colleagues, clients and co-conspirators into the conversation is central to engaging with an audience. Keep talking!

I’m an abstract painter who uses mainly acrylic and house paint. My paintings are built up through layers, where scribbles of pencil, charcoal, poetry, and pastel get lost in the mix. As I rarely share my work online I can’t talk of my own audience, but as a user, I believe the best way to build an engaged audience is to be personal. People will engage with what they relate to, and what speaks to them as a person. In a world oversaturated with adverts and cash-grabs, I think it's really meaningful to be genuine.
